Segmented

So I woke up at 5am as I love to do and decided to do something epic. I had papers to fill and two personal projects to work on. So I decided to draw the digits for Betali Typeface. The process of creation is also widely presented on my Instagram.

As you can see on the picture, one better doesn’t draw numbers on the sunrise or when the Sun is down as long as digits designed on the sunset are pretty awesome. Good to know but that didn’t help me to get closer to finishing the font. I was going to post this funny dependency of Sun position and digits design when that strange curvy 8 fell into my eye. The reason it did was me interest in LEXON Script Clock two days ago. I like how the designers made those segmented numbers.

After tweaking a bit I had a hero to use and create digits from. So I quickly created the numbers and tested if they are awesome enough. They are. Okay, now I have a set of symbols in case I want to create a segmented clock. Not bad for the Sunday morning I was going to spend playing retro games like Tetris or Unreal Tournament.

There are things to improve, like readability. What if I start with WATCH app? That will lead me to three personal projects instead of two!

Flashback drops

Spectating the end of the current design trends turn I am expecting to see some all good elements soon. Remember the ‘drop’? Our friend from years 2000-2003, every logo tended to have. Remember that splay corners every site had in design?

I made my tea and sat here waiting for the design trends flashback. Join!

Knight Moves

The icon on Lisbon Metro train doors and Martim Moniz station decoration

The doors of Lisbon Metro not just warn you about leaning but also highlight the risk of being trapped by closing doors. The Martim Moniz station is decorated with knights and one of them is used to illustrate that icon. This station is called after the noble knight who sacrificed himself by lodging himself in the doorway, preventing the defending Moors from fully closing the door of São Jorge Castle.

Got sick? Stay at home!

We’ve changed — I hope that’s constant — Ukrainian social ad two years ago. How could we do that? We did that creating really good social ad that would be the ad outdoor agencies would fight to place on their billboards pro bono — that means free. Why was I silent for two years? I could find right words to describe the huge amount of work done. Now when I found them I was happy to write share the knowledge.

Dome

Here’s something I’ve been working for about three weeks. That thing I called applied infographics. After the 20th time I explained what I did to my friends and colleagues I decided it’s time to show the thing to the world.

Site structure schemes

Here is a couple of schemes. Schemes of the site structure. I usually create them while working on site information architecture to keep the whole data interaction under control. As I refer to them pretty often, I spend an extra couple of minutes to make them look fancy. These schemes can be expanded or reduced while developing the site but when the IA/UX stuff is developed and decorated (that’s what clients like to call ‘designed’) the site structure schemes usually look quite eye catching. Take a look at this one, pixelated header of which works as the post of the illustration:

Laboratory

While searching for the materials for the further posts, I found some mysterious files. They happened to be screenshots of the apps I made for classes while in university. It looks like classes were about object oriented programming language, maybe even Delphi. I forgot how fun it was ;)

Two traffic advices for Yandex

Bbubles in less than 1023 bbytes

Hard to say, easy to do. That happens every time we do something fun with akella. Last year we made a reader for iPhone and iPad in 33 hours and yesterday we took part in CSS1K. It’s a challenge for coders to decorate the page with pure CSS in less than 1024 bytes. I made the decoration while akella coded everything. You can see the result before reading the post: Bbubles. Please also note that the file with this design saved (no animations, no links) is more than 20 times bigger than the CSS used to decorate and code it!

Iodide! Iodate! — 2 • Data Visualization on Stream and Books Layout Eplained

Iodinated seafood party together ignoring the scale

It’s half past three in the morning and I write this post while the book about use of iodized salt in bakery is printed. Infographics and tables I wrote about couple of weeks ago (Infographics Howto: Iodide! Iodate!) were used on the pages of this book. Some of them changed a bit, others changed a lot after discussions and specifications of charts targeting. Furthermore there happened to be two books not one as it was expected at the beginning. The second one is thinner about use of iodized salt in Denmark. I’ll write about changed charts at first and then I’ll describe the books makeup process.

Offline UX for Girls

One of the mega.genn.org readers commented ‘How to Draw a Flying Kawaii Cat’ saying that his girlfriend was surprised. She thought he was reading about tampons because something in my instructions appeared to her like Tampax. The reader replied he was reading about the cats, not tampons. If your girlfriend sees you reading this post, tell here it’s about user experience, not tampons.

Hands up everyone who threw away macbook or ipod packaging with no regret. Good news: you are minority ;) Every one of us adores nice packaging sensation even if we don’t realize that. One can either create new cool box, either improve the idea that is used everywhere to make a packaging that feels nice.

Iodine Makes Me Clever tshirt print (dribbbbbbbble edition)

It looks like I am absolutely out of time and won’t be able to translate this post into english for a long time. So let’s consider pictures really worth a thousand words and enjoy the examples of the charts and graphs I made for the book about use of iodized salt in bakery.

Yeti News. Guest column

Sign on the door of the office I share with Bo

I wrote a column for Yeti News about branding using game technologies which is a mix of one and a half clever thoughts and something stupid. If you’re good in reading in Russian, you are welcome to read my column.

I won Marylin (not Manson)

Me wearing tshirt (photo taken with coffee mug, the quality is adequate)

I’ve suddenly won a tshirt from vitamins. The print is Marylin formed with sliced fruits. The quality of the tshirt with 100% polyester outside and 100% cotton inside is perfect. The quality of the print is good too.

Thanking the tshirt I’d like to give the vitamins a good advice.

iPhone 4 designer's edition for sale

Please excuse the photo quality because it was taken with some Android HTC phone first generation iPhone

As you may know I’ve broken the glass on my iPhone 4 16Gb that was bought in Great Britain and was never locked. After that it was replaced with brand new front glass and I broke the back glass. So the back part of my iPhone now looks pretty much like decorated with stained glass and doesn’t cut the user because it’s very cool glass that looks quite stylish. As the glass was broken by me one can be sure it is designer’s edition of iPhone. As opposed to other designers I’ll sell my edition much cheaper than iPhone 4 costs here in Kiev (even if you decide to replace the back glass the final price would be still lower than used iPhone). You are welcome to contact me on this matter.

And if you still vague if the back glass is so important here is a story for you I wrote this winter. Thanks to it you would be as sure as I am that iPhone is not just about the back glass but more about user experience and being and iPhone.

Walkyrie × 100 Interactive Catalogue in Your Mobile Device

Not so long ago me and my fellow antique, travel and glamour photographer from Minsk started a project called Walkyrie. Time passed by and here we are with helveticized vintage photo number 100. One-wow-hundred. It’s not just some kind of milestone or a reason to have some champagne but also some kind of a birthday.

33 hrs project

I didn’t post to blog like for ages. Now I am back, at least I hope that my drafts won’t grow mouldy and I’ll finish them. What’s the best way to tell your brain to start working? Make something interesting and resource-intensive. So we (me and akella) did it — 24 hours project. It took us 33 hours to finish. When it was 26th hour we started to notice that it takes more than two dozens of hours, on the hour 30 we understood that we are a bit late. Anyway, we finished and one of us went to have some meal and another started writing the blog post, fell asleep right in front of his display and pushed a ‘Publish’ button just now ;)

Waking Up

I caught one post in the sea of the drafts I have here. There are 10s of them. Anyway, I’ve chosen one and publish it today because this morning twitter is overfilled with messages like “I want to sleep”. I don’t have a problem waking up with a smile (I don’t use don’t use alarms, imagine that ;). Anyway I sometimes think it’s wrong to get up early. But let’s get back to the topic. Below is the remastered version of text comics I’ve sent to bo one morning.

Walkyrie: Walking Mythology

Yes that's the screenshot of the site described below

Know how to make ideal strawberry crème? Take fresh strawberry, little bit of blender, three smiles, cream, something listed in recipe, vanilla and make it to cooperate somehow. We don’t have any strawberries, and have bunch of smiles and photos taken while walking and made to look a little bit vintage. As in an old joke, we just had to add Helvetica texts and serve. So take your mental spoons, my dear intellectual foodies, because we are serving to the table of your imagination the Walkyrie = photo × helvetica.

iFoxy

Today was the day to buy cider and meet bear in the grass. Real cider and toy bear. Couple of weeks was the time to draw a logo with “anime like fox” and company name. As to me my drawing suits Firefox loving mac-nazi t-shirt more, but logo consumer was happy. And I was and am happy. Leave you to taste cider.

Dull tables, hard infographics

Let’s make the top two of ways people love to organize information. First, for sure, is throwing all data in trash can and forgetting about it. The second is tables. People love tables! They love tables so much that Apple was nothing without spreadsheets software. Apple hired Bill Gates and his Microsoft to make that soft and he was happy to get inspired by Mac OS.

Anyway, let’s get back to the tables. I know a lot of office workers who even write texts in Excel — they find that way of information organization quite comfortable. So once again people love tables. It’s a pity that love doesn’t mean “can do good”. I met too much tables in my life but fell in love with only two of them. Other tables look like informational prison where data has to sit in it’s personal cell jailed.

Adobe-kadabra Creative Suite 5

Adobe presented it’s new Creative Suite 5 in Kiev. I visited Adobe’s master classes for InDesign earlier, so I was eager to visit this one too. The presented material is fully covered by Creative Suites 5 descriptions on Adobe’s site so I’ll just say thanks to Markus Bledowski (Adobe evangelist) and Russell Viers and list youtube videos describing features I like most and post brief comments. Jokes and quotes are there at the bottom of the post!

Infinite Real Life Calendar

7 pages (one for each day of the week) that turn around reflecting how fascinating the life is. The best present for the office worker.

Working parts

Once the man I know and who’s job is something about moving numbers from on Excel row to another asked me, “How aren’t you bored with what you do for living (whatever you do)?” As long as whatever I do including writing is of this post can hardly compete with fascinating words of numbers and Excel I started explaining how I still haven’t shoot myself because of all this dull design and ad things I do. I stated that as for me, the secret of successful and interesting job, whatever you do, is in enjoying it. Working under whiplash is nonsense, you have to change either your attitude or your work. Laundering seals, joking on Higgs boson or making sites must be made with ease. That’s when the work will thank you with great ideas and good emotions.

Add dimensions and substract bodies

Peugeot changed it’s logo because of 200th anniversary. Okey, they removed the tongue and body — their will. But what about the font? Does it have to be so freaky? I think that fixing it a bit to look normal would be much better. Something like this:

How to Draw a Flying Cat Really Fast

The behavior and color of this car reminds me of friends' cat named Chacha

I was drawing lotsa kawaii pictures yesterday (I hope to reveal the reason in a couple of days). I drew everything needed but the heat wasn’t gone so I continued this morning drawing a cat who was in my dreams. He asked me why I decided not to draw him? A little bit later after the cat was drawn I was asked to teach to draw suck cats. It’s easy and fast that’s why I write this post and ran away to get ready for the New Year’s Eve. As far as cat is a tiger too, I insist you consider this post a holiday greeting ;)

News spectrum

Every time when I start doing something for periodical publications I can hardly choose between blue-black and black-blue combinations. This color combinations is diluted by grey, which makes it more — hahaha — delightful. Newspapers are mad about blue. Magazines are mad about red. It’s a good news that guys who made press color schemes didn’t paint our world. Otherwise we would live in the world without photosynthesis because there would be no green. We would choke — we can’t breathe without the oxygen.

Chuck Norris fact no. ∞: He ruins App Store with terror

Here is another fun fact about Chuck Norris: that was him who bited Apple logo. No, this one is really real not just real like previous ones. Long story short. Chuck Norris got offended by that fact that his application for iPhone had awfull sales and blamed — you’ll never guess — Apple usability for that. Apple App Store should be sorry for that some useless iphone run-and-gun app doesn’t sell. Chuck terrorised Apple Inc. that he’ll move to Android platform from iPhone (did anyone care about that?) and rejected design changes Apple proposed. So Chuck Norris created his own design for App Store and Apple used his idea to change the App Store interface. Know what? Chuck was much better counting to infinity and travelling to Mars then as UX specialist.

Sorry, Mario, the Princess is right after the crossroads

I found a link to stoplight concept of Damjan Stanković on dirty.ru. Designer offers to add sectors round the stop light so the drivers could see how soon they can move again and stop their engines thus saving gas and nature.

Interview for Smashing Magazine

I don’t get excited drinking coffee. One cup is enough for me to fall asleep. That’s why I wasn’t drinking coffee that night. But I answered the questions of Arsart who was writing the big article about web design in Russia for Smashing Magazine. I act as a bystander who’s somehow involved in the Russian web design scene. The article that includes my interview is fun and interesting: Showcase of Web Design in Russia.

I’d like to tell you more but I am veeerrryy sleepy and see no way to wake as long as coffee is not the answer. So I’ll stop right here. ;)

GUI fails of Google Waves

As they perfectly say: there are a lot of talks about invites and so little about Google Wave itself. I’ll help Google and talk about Google Wave. Sorry folks, I don’t have invites to send at looks like had none at all — no easy way to find out and not a word in the Help section. Oh, Google, you are so… so… arrrrgh! Just because it’s invite-only and not everyone can enjoy this, let’s be honest, pathetically cool but practically useless service, I’ll describe you why Google made its best to implement its unique philosophy on awful user experience in one more of its interfaces. Don’t get sad and bored, I’ll highlight just three most outrages GUI fails novelties ;)

Take a pic to contact

I made a pretty business card for photographer with QR code on one side. It sounds like a good joke that you have to take pic of his card if you want him to contact you to take yours. I just feel like I don’t want to right anything more, so I illustrated how it works if you have card, cell phone and app that recognizes QR codes on that phone:

Just because I try to be honest every time it is possible (two or three times a year ;)) I want to confess that QR code on illustration doesn't represent contact information while it just contents known mem

I use QR app on my iPhone to recognize QR codes. It helped me a bit on Sziget ;) You can practice in recognizing codes using any QR codes in this post. Here is one more with my contacts:

Other unusual cards

I love iTunes 9 more than 8

iTunes 8 and iTunes 9 on the right it's alright ;)

Slightly changed GUI elements setting distance between Mac OS X and its’ competitors, who are in different ways get “inspired” looking at Mac OS X. I hope that iTunes 9 GUI design let’s us kinda spy through the keyhole and get info about how the next Mac OS X design would look like.

By the way, did you know how to turn the best mini player mode in iTunes? Use ⌘W keyboard shortcut. It just can’t be more minimalistic!

Iodine makes me clever

My friend who doesn’t start his blog just to make me unable to link to him is now a sectary of community where it’s believed that people must eat iodine. Not pure iodine to prevent wounds inside the had but iodised salt. It helps to fill a person with necessary iodine amount. It’s very important to have enough iodine in your body if you live in radiation affected places like Ukraine. Iodine also prevents kids from growing idiots. Doesn’t help at 100% and gives a warranty but minimises some risks.

My friend is visiting the conference of that iodine-addicted missionaries about saving Ukraine. So I’ve created him a uniform, so he can spread the news that iodine and salt are good together!

Bo Card

Made a card for bo. The strikedthrough text says “I can do everything” while the title is “editor”. It’s fun to make unusual cards.

Save for Web problem — pictures lighter then original

Vasco da Gamma station in Lisbon

It’s easy to imagine lifelike situation when two photos with pale pictures on them talk to each other: — Hey, you’ve been on vacation. Haven’t you tanned? — I did but I was saved using Safe for Web after that!

I think that everyone met this problem when using Safe for Web — pics become lighter and kinda pale. Looks like someone mysterious used levels to adjust it.

We won't go to Opera today, honey

There are three ways to make a tasty dish. You can take everything you consider to be tasty, mix it and throw into boiling oil. It would be fried and even can be tasty. My friend, who came from London to have a pint of beer with me in Kiev, told me about Fried Mars — you have to fry Mars in boiling oil. Someone can even find it tasty, but let’s get back from Mars to Earth. The second way to make a dish is used by chefs in restaurants: you’ll have to know how to cook masterly. But this is the hardest way and not everyone can do it while the first is within everyone’s power. There is one more way where you don’t have to be virtuoso of cooking but still will be able to make a tasty… erm… result ;) Just cook like it’s written in the cookbook!

I’ve just realised that the metaphor would only win if I use cocktails instead of dishes but the I’ll have to get rid of Fried Mars, so let’s leave the things they are.

So, the choice of the way to cook for a person, who just wants to make tasty dinner but isn’t in any way chief cook, is obvious. He or she takes the cookbook and cooks instead of throwing pickles, Skittles, two sausages, vanilla and unagi in boiling oil, expecting for acceptable result.

How to create pretty PowerPoint presentation without killing all the human beings on Earth

Long time ago you have to think of real-sounding story to explain your lies. Today in 21st century you can just make powerpoint presentation. One day it comes to every designer — he has to stare at icon that looks like hebrew qoph letter jumping in his Dock. When this glorious event happened with me I decided to make professional good looking on every PC or Mac presentation and try not to kill all the people while doing it. The first statements were okay but I wanted to kill all and everyone when I finished making the presentation. So I made a list of advices that can help to save not whole Earth population, but at least it’s half.

Kawaii Numbers

Okay, it was morning, I wanted to sleep and somehow wrote long interesting and long comment in one blog. Then I woke up swearing at myself: not recent posts in my blog and I write long comments in others. So I decided to post that comment here, adding pictures. It’s about pay cards for cellular operators and its’ usability.

Kettle that boils me

I bought a new kettle today Copco Torino (central on the photo) to replace the old one made in Czechoslovak and burnt like heretic. It’s a miracle that I could find a pretty-looking kettle that suits my kitchen design. I was desperate about other kettles and was about buying electrical one (they got pretty designs). The sparkling circle on it’s lid is whistler and the lid is opened by the gentle press on the front part of handle. I was proud to know that this water boiler without only a hint on spout is 2005 Housewares Design Award winner.

In Rome

The idea to celebrate my 26th birthday in Rome was perfect: we didn’t succeed in robbing the city in 4 days (we’re not Etruscans, you know) but we paid attention to it’s masterpieces, wine, asti, pastas, pizzas and lasagnes. Almost forgot: there was a lot of ice cream!

Please Say Something

Romantic story about the cat who loves mouse who hates world and everything is in pixels. I remember my 90’s with Another World and Flashback with their unique inimitable vector polygon graphics with no antialiasing. Please Say Something looks like not like ancestor, but something that reminds of these games intros and gameplay. Perfect story, perfect ideology, perfect characters. Also it somehow have something in common with scandinavian design and infographics. I am really impressed and consider it to be reborn or may be start of new trend in animation. Good job O’Reilly! Have a look in HD! It’s worth it!

Here we are back in the studio!

Not so long ago I was in Benetton and saw a little girl who didn’t like any of clothes proposed. Her parents were despaired. Her reply on every dress was “It’s so retro!”. It lasted until the salesgirl came to them and with a sight of conspiracy proposed the models of 2010.

I felt myself like that girl and her parents about my blog — no space to write posts as I want it to. So I made my own 2010 collection and here it is — mega is as good as new.
